Resources and Publications

The Learning Collaborative has developed different resource briefs, reports, and summaries related to Health Equity and Young Children These include general framework papers and tools, reports related to the child health practitioner’s specific role in promoting health equity, and policy roles in developing systemic approaches to improve health equity. The Learning Collaborative also hosts different webinars and presentations as part of this work. 

Shared Interests on Behalf of Young Children Webinar and Presentation: This presentation focused on health and early learning systems "asks" and "offers" to each system as both work toward building early childhood systems that address child well-being and health inequities. Making the Link Between Early Childhood Systems Building and Poverty Reduction: This webinar provided a concise overview of welfare policy and young child poverty in the United States, and why poverty scholars are now taking a particular focus upon strengthening families as a long-term necessity to addressing poverty and inequality. As a prelude to developing the Learning Center, in 2013 the BUILD Initiative hosted a cross-state Conference on Health Equity and Young Children in Denver. The Conference Proceedings offer an overview of the different plenary and workshop sessions at the Conference.

Health’s Role in School Readiness: This presentation uses the ovals framework to describe the five “C” roles for health in promoting school readiness – coverage, clinical care, coordination, consulting, and community health.

Publications - Health Practitioner Roles

In the first years of a child’s life, the health practitioner is often the first professional contact with young children and can serve in a critical role of responding to both medical and social determinants of health. These resources all speak to issues involved in primary child health practitioners serving in this “first contact/responder” role.

Top 10 Things We Know About Young Children and Health Equity...and Three Things We Need to Do with What We Know explores the nexus of health and other developmental needs of young children and offers recommendations for promoting health equity. 

The Healthy Child Storybook highlights a number of exemplary health initiatives to improve young children’s healthy development, with references to their evidence base.

Learning Collaboratives and CoINs to Improve Child Health summarizes a variety of different existing CoINs and learning collaboratives by health innovators in the field related to the Learning Collaborative on Health Equity and Young Children and to be drawn upon in this work.
